Hamilton Beach HQ is located outside of Richmond, Virginia, so the staff here is most familiar with barbecue from our neighbor to the south – North Carolina-style bbq. But there are so many barbecue styles and sauces to enjoy all over the country. From NC-style pulled pork to saucy Texas brisket, ‘tis the season for barbecue. This summer we wanted to expand our ‘cue catalog. We’re steering away from the tomato-based bbq sauces you’re used to and making an Alabama staple – Alabama white sauce.
In a small bowl or in your Hamilton Beach® single-serve blender, mix mayo, apple cider vinegar (you could also use white vinegar if you have that on hand), horseradish, sugar, salt, garlic powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
Popular in North Alabama, Alabama white is a far stretch from the thick, sweet, bottled bbq sauce you buy at the grocery store. This mayo-based sauce is tangy, creamy, and delicious served on just about any of your favorite grilled summer staples.
This sauce looks a lot like your favorite Caesar salad dressing but has a more complex flavor. The horseradish adds a little extra acidity and bite into the already tangy sauce. It’s thinner than the bottled stuff, so if your family prefers a thicker sauce, add a little extra mayo until you get the consistency you’re looking for.
We drizzled our homemade Alabama white on top of grilled chicken and served it with baked beans and fresh summer creamed corn. The sauce perfectly complements the seasoned chicken and the sweet and salty beans. No matter what you have on your bbq plate this summer, you’re going to want this bbq sauce on the table to top it with. Try it on grilled fish, pulled pork, or even for dipping your favorite sticky ribs into. Are you hungry yet?
Put down the bottled sauce and make this zingy white bbq sauce to serve at cookouts or family dinners this summer.
