{Enter to Win!} Looking Back at the Iconic Hamilton Beach Drink Mixer + Duff Goldman Giveaway

Hamilton Beach knows how to mix things up. In 1911, our original drink mixer created a sensation making malts for eager customers in drugstore fountains across America. Throughout the early twentieth century, the Hamilton Beach Drink Mixer was busy mixing treats in almost every local soda fountain and ice cream parlor.

With over a century of innovation and design, our powerful drink mixers are still a mainstay in many busy restaurants. You may have even seen one in a diner or ice cream parlor near you. Or, you could have one of these home versions, perfect for mixing frosty shakes for your family. The commercial model we are giving away at the end of this contest includes three stainless steel mixing cups and has varied speeds on each of its three mixers. Whoever said “three’s a crowd” obviously wasn’t talking about milkshakes.

Back when sipping on a straw at a soda fountain was a slow pleasure at the end of the school day, the “soda jerk” was the clerk who made your order. If you were hip, you ordered using soda jerk jargon. While it may sound funny today, this was the way of the soda counter back then. If you said, “shake one van and mash it,” you’d get a vanilla shake with mashed bananas. “Spit in it” meant raspberries were mixed into your drink, while “spit on it” let raspberries decorate the top. “Fuzzy” added peaches to the mix, “gravel” added nuts, and a request for “Chicago” added pineapple juice or soda.

We think these great phrases could provide a ton of inspiration the next time you host a birthday party, bridal shower, baby shower or wedding. Have some fun with these delicious recipes, and go ahead and “mash one in the hay.”

Get the full scoop on soda jerk jargon here.

July is National Ice Cream Month! Each week, we will post recipes that were created using “soda jerk jargon” with a few adaptations. Keep in mind these recipes don’t have to be measured precisely, so feel free to experiment with your own favorite ingredients!

Test Kitchen Tip: Ice cream recipes are measured in scoops. Four scoops are equivalent to about 1-1/2 cups.

We will be giving away a Hamilton Beach Drink Mixer every Friday in the month of July.

The first three winners will receive a DrinkMaster® Drink Mixer in white, black or chrome (a $39.99-$48.99 value.)

The grand prize winner will be announced on July 26th!

This winner will receive the Triple Spindle Drink Mixer signed by Duff Goldman at the 2011 Blue Moon Burger Bash (a $1,266.00 value.)
